According to the current news cycle, Hillary Clinton has told multiple friends that she is considering a run in 2020. This is apparently due to recent indictments by the Mueller probe in the ongoing (and never ending) Russia investigation. This would be her third run for the Presidency, after losing the Democratic primary to Barack Obama in 2008 and most recently being beaten by President Trump in 2016. To be fair, this is still highly unlikely, very improbable. What she has said though is that she isn’t closing any doors…
Well, she should close this particular door, and lock it, and smash the key. Don’t get me wrong. I think Hillary Clinton would make a better President than Donald Trump, and by a distance. I also thought that in 2016. She had her chance, and she blew it. She came up against one of the most ridiculously flawed candidates in U.S Presidential history. No experience. Daily gaffes. Extreme positions. Hillary played it safe though. This was one of many campaigning mistakes. She didn’t campaign nearly enough in the swing states which gave Trump the White House. She played on the celebrity card which annoyed people more than it helped. Most importantly, she had no message! “I’m with her” was as silly as “Make America Great Again” but for the time and the context, it was actually worse. She played on identity politics, relied too strongly on the black and female vote. Other than ‘vote for me because I’m a women’, her campaign seemed not really to have a central theme. This is in stark contrast to Barack Obama who ran on hope and change in 2008 and had a central promise of healthcare. Hillary basically said more of the same, which didn’t excite the left, and it surely enraged the right. Had she say built her campaign off a more consistent message, and campaigned in the right states, there may have been a woman in the White House. Most scarily, it seems she blames James Comey and the focus on her emails as what cost her the election. She denies that many voters were simply disinterested in her. In reality, she should have wiped the floor with Trump. Emails shouldn’t have even come into it.
I can understand Hillary’s frustration and her wish to get back at Donald Trump. She thinks she can make up for the disappointment of 2016. The problem is she is thinking of herself and herself only. A new nominee would fare significantly better, and would have a better chance at taking back the White House for the Democratic Party. If there is one sure way to give Trump four more years, it is for Hillary to run again. There are so many young candidates coming through and exciting experienced candidates as well that can battle it out in the primaries. Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Tulsi Gabbard. Other potential candidates include O’Rourke and Joe Kennedy III. The Clinton dynasty is over, and there is nothing to be gained by running. So, please Hillary… Don’t run!
